We did, and it's made in Scotland, where it should be. To check it's genuine, look under your Smart Mat for the embossed divotEND and Smart Mat names – the Chinese knock-offs don't have them.

Yes. The Smart Mat has been thoroughly examined and robotically tested by both the R&A and the USGA, who determined that it provides no advantage. It is permitted for use wherever a local rule allows preferred lie mats. No other fairway or winter mat has been tested to this degree by these eminent organisations – including the Made in China copy cat mats.

If your club's Green Committee has a local rule allowing preferred lie mats, you're good to go. Show them your Smart Mat first – once they see it can't be cheated off, they'll usually approve it.

Handicap 17 or over: short side forward, as your divots are usually behind the ball. 16 or under: long side forward. Place the mat behind your ball, tap it down once so the feet sit on the grass, then use your club face to roll the ball back to the Strike Point hole. The ball rests on the grass itself – a natural lie. See our step-by-step guide and video.

Use our flexible tees: L (35mm/1.38") for standard drivers, XL (45mm/1.77") for deep-face drivers. Slip the tee into the Strike Point hole, place your ball on it and lower the whole kit to the ground holding it as you would a normal tee with thumb and 2 fingers, short side forward. You're teed up in seconds, however frozen or hard the ground, and you won't lose the tee.
